The invention disclose using secreted splicing variant of mammal Klotho (s-KL) as an agent for the prevention and/or treatment of cognitive and/or behaviour impairments. It also refers to gene constructs and expression vectors useful in gene therapy for the delivery of said s-KL variant to the central nervous system of a mammal, in particular a rodent or a human. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising either the protein s-KL or any gene construct for expressing the protein in the CNS are also disclosed.

A process and system for producing random numbers by means of a quantum random number generator is disclosed, comprising the steps of operating a multimode laser in a laser cavity with periodic modulatio of a net gain, and detecting the random indensity pattern produced by th the inter-mode beating occurring within the laser cavity. The numbers produced are truly random and a minimal number of elements is required for operating the system.

All flexoelectric devices have two electrodes and a dielectric material sandwitched between them. When subject to an inhomogeneous deformation (strain gradient), such as bending, the dielectric material will polarize and generate a charge density at its surface. The role of the electrodes is to collect this charge. The figure of merit of such a device is the effective flexoelectric coefficient, µeff, which is the coefficient between the generated charge and the applied strain gradient. The flexoelectric coefficient of most materials is in the nC/m range, and only occasionally can reach up to µC/m. The present invention proposes that substituting the dielectric (electrically insulating) layer for a semiconductor (electrically conducting) layer results in a much larger flexoelectric coefficient that can reach up to mC/m.
