Piezoelectricity is the property of a material by which electricity or electric polarization is produced as a result of applying mechanical strain. Piezoelectricity has been studied and utilized for many decades in useful technologies such as ultrasound scanners or pressure sensors. Lead-based ferroelectrics such as lead zirconate titanate (PZT) are the most 15 widely exploited and extensively used piezoelectric materials, but they contain a toxic element (lead), and there is a strong regulatory incentive to progressively get rid of all lead content in electronic devices. The present invention relates to the field of flexoelectric materials ans particularly to flexoelectric devices comrprisin flexoelectric materials that generate a voltage when a strain gradient is applied.
