Among different biosensing technologies, optical biosensors based on plasmonic phenomena at the nanoscale have been the focus of extensive research and development over the last years due to their improved surfaces sensitivity, well-known biofunctionalization strategies, and their potential for direct, label-free and multiplexed biodetection in real-time for the development of the Point-of-Care device. However, the main challenges in nanoplasmonic biosensors are high-throughput fabrication processes for large-scale production and effective optimization of the evanescent decay length for enhanced surface sensitivity according to the biorecognition event. The present invention relates generally to the field of biosensors, and in particular the present invention provides a two-step method that can be applied to any 1-2D nanocrystal template for metaplasmonic biosensing in order to enhance the surface sensivity for biorecognition events below 100 nm, preferably between 10 to 15 nm.
